The choir was privileged to sing with the Zohra Ensemble, an amazingly talented group of young Afghan girls. They were led by 22 year old Negin Khpolwak, the first female conductor in the history of Afghanistan.
I felt blessed and humbled to have taken part in a project which is overcoming adversity through the sheer determination of these youngsters to break down barriers and pave a path for the future.
Their story is heartbreaking and, at the same time, inspiring. To be forbidden from listening to, playing or performing music can only be ‘hell on earth’. It makes me so much more appreciative of the freedom I have.
This experience will remain with me for a long time.
